Unsafe private e-mail service

Indian government hopes to prohibit the use of Gmail’s officially, partly due to a leak about NSA spy, but unsafe private e-mail service, making this a good policy.

According to a report by The Times of India, the Indian government is preparing to issue headquartered in the United States prohibit the use of e-mail services such as Gmail, official government business. In contrast, government employees are expected to use by the StateInformationCenter’s official resources.

This seems to a large extent by Edward Snowden, government contracting company Booz Allen Hamilton, a former employee of disclosure documents, detailing the archive data on the Internet through Google and other companies of cooperation, such as e-mail and instant reaction to the news, Microsoft and Facebook.

Separate behind this policy change, policy change is a good decision, official government business should not happen in private e-mail services, namely, because the private e-mail service is not particularly safe start.

Reason 1: Palin e-mail hacking incident

September 16, 2008, a university student hacked Yahoo account (at that time) Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who had been in the 2008 presidential election, was named as John McCain’s running mate . Hackers, later identified as David Kernell, released on the content of e-mail accounts lair is called “4CHAN” subversive activities.

Hackers, because it detailed, is incredibly simple. With the rise of the Internet, a little more celebrity politicians no obvious artistic, musical or acting talent (although Karl Rove, a surprisingly adept rapper). The fact remains that politician’s personal information, such as your birthday, zip code, as well as where they went to high school all public information issues. As it happens, Kernell bits of information required to obtain Palin’s Yahoo account is her birth date, her zip code, and where she met her husband, you may have guessed, it is indeed her high school.

This vulnerability will not be possible if Palin had used e-mail services provided by the State to be assigned to this account, as such a national account’s password will probably need to call someone in the tasks.

Although the maximum disclosure, hackers in some official documents and scheduling information exists, but the fact remains that the account was hacked at your fingertips. In addition, the account hacked Palin in her office 966 days a span of six different accounts, according to the Sunlight Foundation. From these accounts has been restored through hacking Kernell, as well as state-owned enterprises the issue of public records released by e-mail.

Reason 2: You get what you pay for

In the past year, Microsoft has been attacked Google for its use automatic e-mail scanning, in order to provide relevant ads, this practice has been in the April 2004 launch of Gmail. This argument is not entirely without merit, and civil liberties groups which from the outset has been a problem. However, Microsoft’s PR blitz complaints ring hollow:, Outlook.com (privacy policy, for good measure, Yahoo), so that the user’s personal information is collected and used for advertising purposes.

Microsoft’s track record of data security has been quite uneven. Outlook.com, former Hotmail, has been subject to a number of high-profile security breaches confusing incompetence, including the 1999 event, allowing anyone to log into any Hotmail account using the password “EH”. In 2001, a similar vulnerability allows users from any other e-mail through a Hotmail account retrieval modify URL, including the target user name and message number. Disclosure, Microsoft spent three weeks to fix the problem. Recently, migration, this year from Hotmail to Outlook.com lead to massive power outages, prevent users from accessing their e-mail.

Yahoo’s track record of data security is a more capable, although some omissions have been made. In November 2012, a cross-site scripting vulnerability allows hackers to get access to the user account, and redirects the user outside of Yahoo. Similar vulnerability in January 2013 once again been recognized.

Search ratio and the appropriate response

Although the Indian government is carrying out a switch may be a little disadvantage, but it’s very few people with the hacker’s ability beyond your average 4CHAN users to improve security. Physical security measures, such as encrypted e-mail, will be more effective in preventing someone other than the intended recipient of the email is read.

In a perfect world, than we currently (SMTP) can create a better deal, which would have practical and effective security identity and privacy. Prior to this, many people are still trying to be a container equivalent to the value of IT hastily assembled on a barge.
